What is Reiki?
Reiki is a style of bodywork in which tissues of the body are not manipulated nor is physical force or touch applied to the body system being worked on. It is one of the many forms of energy work which is gaining in recognition for the huge benefits they hold for stress reduction and wellness. Reiki (pronounced ray-key) is a Japanese technique for stress reduction and relaxation that also promotes healing. It was rediscovered by Dr. Mikao Usui in the early1900’s. Reiki is administered by “lying on hands” and techniques such as this have been practiced for thousands of years. The word Reiki comes from two Japanese words – Rei and Ki. Reiki can be administered in a pure Reiki session or integrated into any bodywork session given by a Reiki practitioner.
The meaning of Rei
The word Rei as it is used in Reiki is most accurately interpreted to mean higher knowledge or spiritual consciousness which comes from the Higher Self and is all-knowing. It understands each person completely. It knows the cause of all problems and difficulties and knows how to heal them.
The meaning of Ki
The word Ki means the same as Chi in Chinese, Prana in Sanskrit and Ti or Ki in Hawaiian. It also has been called odic force, orgone and bioplasma. Ki is life energy. It is also known as the vital life force or the universal life force. This is the non-physical energy that animates all living things. As long as something is alive, it has life energy circulating through it and surrounding it; when it dies, the life energy departs. If your life energy is low, or if there is a restriction in its flow, you are more vulnerable to illness. When it is high and flowing freely, you are less likely to get sick. Life energy plays an important role in everything we do. It animates the body and has higher levels of expression. Ki is also the primary energy of our emotions, thoughts and spiritual life. Ki is present all around us and can be accumulated and guided by the mind.
Again, what is Reiki?
Reiki can be defined as spiritually guided life energy. This interpretation of the work Reiki most closely describes the experience most people have of it; Reiki guiding itself with its own wisdom, rather that requiring the direction of the practitioner.
Who is a good candidate for receiving a Reiki session?
Anyone wishing to receive energy work or simply wishing to feel better can receive Reiki. Reiki is both powerful and gentle. It is always beneficial and works to improve the effectiveness of all other types of therapy. A treatment feels like a wonderful glowing radiance which works in harmony with all other kinds of treatments. If you are recovering from a serious trauma (emotional or physical), undergoing treatment for illness or simply wish to release some blockages in the flow of your life energy Reiki can be received and help you through the process. Reiki can do no harm and only works to enhance the current medical treatment you are receiving in a positive energetic manner.
What to expect from your Reiki session
If you choose to receive a Reiki session by itself you will lie face up on a massage table fully clothed while the session is administered. The practitioner will use the technique of “laying on hands” which means there is no bodily contact between the client and practitioner. The practitioner’s hands will vary in distance from the body sometimes one inch, sometimes five inches following the guidance of the Reiki energy itself. When I receive a Reiki session I like to use the time to feel how energy is flowing (or not flowing) through my body and see how my energy level feels different when blockages are opened up. Many report entering a deep state of relaxation different than they have ever experienced while others fall asleep for a much needed rest and rejuvenation.
Why not? Reiki can be administered anywhere and is not limited to a bodywork treatment room. On an airplane, in a hospital, at the beach, integrated into a massage session, while on a long drive, during a dental session, at the end of a psychotherapy session, anytime positive energy is needed Reiki can be given. When most other forms of Bodywork is contraindicated Reiki is a great way to ease someone's pain and discomfort. A few examples of these situations would be severe illness, end of life, anxiety and fear of skin to skin touch, severe mental disturbance, burn victims, broken bones and open wounds.
